I've read much of Hallpike's work over the last year with pleasure. His writing is excellent: bold, insightful, though-provoking and occasionally testy. Certainly his criticism of evolutionary psychology has influenced me, and I find myself much more skeptical of the casual use of evolutionary arguments to explain some aspect of human behavior.

Two additional books of his I would recommend: "How We Got Here", Hallpike's take on social evolution and the history of humanity, and "On The Wilder Shores of Life" his recently published autobiographical account of fieldwork in Ethiopia and Papua New Guinea.
